Junior Full Stack Developer
Kuala Lumpur, MY · Full time
Build and maintain features across our e-commerce site and back-office admin, working directly with the marketing, operations and retail teams.
POPLOOK sells modest fashion online from Kuala Lumpur. Most of our traffic is mobile, our busiest weeks are Raya and Mega Sale, and the site has to stay up through both.
This is a small team. Nobody hands you a perfectly specced ticket, and you will talk to the people who asked for the work rather than reading a spec they wrote.
Who tends to do well here
- You are curious about the business, not just the code. You ask "why do we need this?" before you build it.
- You are honest when you are stuck. We would much rather you ask on day two than disappear for a week.
- You can hold a deadline during campaign season without cutting corners that break checkout.
- You want to own things. In a small team, nobody hands you a perfectly specced ticket.
What you’ll do
- Build and maintain features across our e-commerce website and back-office admin — product pages, checkout, promotions, vouchers, loyalty and rewards.
- Fix bugs reported by our customer service, marketing and retail teams, and keep the site stable through high-traffic periods like Raya and Mega Sale campaigns.
- Work with our internal APIs and third-party integrations: payment gateways, courier and shipping providers, POS/inventory, WhatsApp and email marketing tools, and analytics pixels.
- Support the campaign calendar — landing pages, banners, discount rules and sale mechanics that marketing needs shipped on a deadline.
- Write clean, readable code, and document what you build so the next person (including future you) can pick it up.
- Help monitor site performance, page speed and uptime, and flag problems before customers do.
- Work directly with non-technical colleagues in marketing, operations and retail to turn a business request into something that actually works.
What we’re looking for
A diploma or degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, IT — or equivalent practical experience. A strong portfolio matters more to us than the certificate.
One to two years of hands-on web development, including internship, freelance or serious personal projects.
Skills
- Frontend — HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and at least one modern framework or templating system.
- Backend — At least one server-side language — PHP, Node.js, Python or similar.
- Databases — MySQL or PostgreSQL. You should be able to write your own queries.
- Git — Working knowledge, and branch-based collaboration.
- REST APIs — Understand how they work, with experience consuming or building one.
- Communication — English and Bahasa Malaysia, with non-technical teammates.
- Location — Based in Kuala Lumpur, or willing to work from here.
Nice to have
- Any e-commerce platform experience — PrestaShop, Laravel, WooCommerce, Magento, Shopify or a custom-built store.
- Experience with payment gateways (iPay88, Billplz, Stripe, PayPal) or Malaysian courier APIs.
- Basic cloud and deployment exposure: AWS (S3, EC2), Cloudflare, CI/CD, or Linux server basics.
- Familiarity with Google Analytics / GA4, Meta Pixel, or tag management.
- Comfortable using AI coding tools (Copilot, Claude, Cursor) — and able to explain the code they produce, not just paste it.
- An eye for design and responsive layouts. Most of our traffic is mobile.
